One of the first things you want you to do in order to have a Ramadan filled with reward is to recognize what you want to achieve and what you want to get rid of.
Grab a piece of paper or pull up your Notes App and write down all of your spiritual strengths and weaknesses. Like if you pray on time or if you backbite and so on.
Once you're done doing this, think of ways you can work to better your good habits and lessen your bad ones.
For example, if you have a problem with swearing, make a commitment to replace those words with Islamic phrases like "أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّـيْطٰنِ الرَّجِيْمِ" , and make supplication that you swear less.
As the weeks go by, track how much good you've done and how much sin. You can do this by keeping a journal, for example.
By the end of Ramadan, you'd probably have gained a lot of hasanat, and learned more about yourself along the way
